Development of the Term and Requirements
"Sustainability" as a term originates from forestry and has been further developed and specified for buildings since the 1980s.
Policy Framework and Stakeholders
At the international and European level as well as in Germany, sustainability in buildings is supported and implemented by various stakeholders.
Dimensions and Protection Goals of Sustainable Building
Sustainability is usually described in the classical three dimensions of ecology, economy and socio-culture, from which specific sustainability goals are derived.
Instruments and Competences
For the sustainable planning, construction, modernisation and operation of buildings, regular coordination between building owners, users and planning team is important.
Environmentally-Friendly and Energy-Efficient
Raw materials and energy are consumed in all life cycle phases of a building. This leads to various impacts on the whole environment.
Economic and Durable
Buildings are particularly durable "goods" whose construction and use must be considered together. The buildings should also incur low operating costs.
Functional and Comfortable
A high level of living comfort as well as satisfaction and performance at the workplace also include appropriate qualities for the building users.
Adequate and Robust
Sustainable building also includes a long service life for building materials and technical equipment. Users' expectations should be coordinated at an early stage.
Suitable Material and Low Cost
When determining the construction and materiality of buildings, aspects such as life cycle, resource conservation and user health should also be taken into account.
International Standardisation Work in the Field of Sustainable Building
International solutions for describing, evaluating and communicating the contribution of buildings to sustainable development were developed.
European Standardisation
The aim of European standardisation work is to create a uniform body of standards for the European internal market, e.g. for sustainable building.
Research Projects on Sustainable Building in Germany
Various research projects in the field of sustainable building support the development of new calculation methods, innovative construction products and future regulations.
Member Area Round Table on Sustainable Building
The "Round Table on Sustainable Building" is a committee to support the Federal Ministry of Building in issues relating to the federal government's work in the field of sustainable building.
Further Organisations and Stakeholders in the Field of Sustainable Building
In addition to the federal activities presented on this portal, various measures for sustainable building are also being implemented in the federal states and by other institutions.
